Categories: CHANGE MAKER
An entrepreneur who has been self-employed for more than 20 years in the construction industry

Jesmina (Naomi) STEMMET born and raised in the notorious gang land Hanover Park and it is with this passion, drive and full understanding of what it entails to be a young person growing up in a disadvantaged district like Hanover Park, that she has found the strength to pursue such a huge noble cause. Following the call of her heart “Community Developer”.

An entrepreneur who has been self-employed for more than 20 years in the construction industry. Naomi has since empowered herself through up-skilling in carpentry, plumbing, painting and the building trade, traits upon which she has established her own construction company. She has since developed into a subject-matter-expert in construction. Her current qualifications include an NQF Level 4 Tender Certificate, Carpentry, Painting and Project Management certificates by trade, and she also holds a seta facilitator, mentorship, coaching and assessor qualification.

She has also served as the Western Cape Provincial Manager for WIFAH (Women in Food and Hospitality) women empowerment, and has managed an Offender Rehabilitation and Reintegration project with the Pollsmoor Correctional Centre with Unilever and The City of Cape Town for abuse women. Naomi is currently the Community Developer Practitioner of Youth Impact and Sustainable Solutions (YISS) NPO at the Hanover Park Youth Hub in partnership with Councillor Antonio Van Der Rheede ward 47, where her function includes project manager, providing business and technical skills training/coaching/mentorship, hands-on assistance to SMEs, co-operative’s, NPOs and youth development projects, and the development and implementation of operational processes and systems, in order to enable businesses to function optimally.

However, Naomi’s primary focus and heartbeat is with the development and empowerment of youth in disadvantaged communities and crime prevention projects. Naomi has pioneered the establishing of youth business co-operatives in areas such as Langa, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Lavender Hill, Mitchell’s Plain, Hanover Park, Philippi and Manenberg with the main objective of providing these youngsters and future leaders with the necessary business and trade skills that will provide a platform for them to enjoy a successful, sustainable and meaningful lifestyle, instead of getting lured into drugs, prostitution, criminal or gang – related activities.

My Passion:
To uplift, empower and develop youth, women and NPO’s in disadvantage communities and has always been aligned with “giving back to the community where you come from”, and it is with this passion, drive and full understanding of what it entails to be a young person growing up in a disadvantaged district like Hanover Park.

My Dream:

  • Increasing the survival rate of SMEs, co-operatives and NPO’s in disadvantage communities by facilitating and mobilising necessary resources, Increasing the effectiveness and efficacy of programmes targeting job creation via sustainable projects.
  • Increasing the pace of job creation through enterprise development and entrepreneurship.
  • Collaboration for thriving communities and a caring society.
  • Expand the crime prevention and substance abuse projects.

How I would change our world:
By implementing my dream.
