Training Centre for Young Adults With Mild Intellectual Disabilities

The Living Link plays two roles in facilitating the equal inclusion of people with mild intellectual disabilities into society:

  1. Life and work skills training for young adults (18-35 years old)
  2. Supportive Employment Services for graduates and other people with mild intellectual disabilities

The Living Link needs to fill the position of Employment Consultant of the Cape Town Branch for as soon as possible. This is a part-time, consultant position with the possibility of becoming permanent as The Living Link grows.

The branch, based in Pinelands, is a new venture and has been training young people with mild intellectual disabilities for about one and a half years. There are three main goals to our training:

  • Confidence, acknowledgement of abilities and personal growth
  • Increased independence and responsibility as an equal member of society
  • Successful work ethics that enhance the employability of each individual

Role of Employment Consultant:

This position requires you to open up meaningful and equal employment opportunities for job-seeking Members of The Living Link (this includes graduates from our programme as well as other members with mild intellectual disabilities), and to assist the retention of each employed member. Employment includes the following: permanent employment, part-time, fixed term. volunteer, GAP Skills Development Programme, internships, learnerships or other meaningful opportunities.

You will be reporting to the Manager of the Cape Town Branch.

Responsibilities of this position:

  • Meet with Jobseekers for assessment and development of Behaviour Support Plan
  • Source potential employers
  • Organise meetings with potential employers
  • Present The Living Link’s Supportive Employment Model and its processes
  • Jobseeker preparation for employment process
  • Updating administration
  • Researching resources/current material to assist your position

Skills required for this position:

  • Passion for the equal inclusion and meaningful participation of people with disabilities into all areas of society – especially open labour market employment
  • Experience working with people with intellectual disabilities (experience working with other forms of disability will be considered)
  • Valid Driver’s Licence and own vehicle
  • Understand the corporate culture of each company presenting to/supporting (i.e speak the language of the business)
  • Exposure working in, or working with NGO’s
  • Persistence and “never give in” attitude
  • Solid coaching and mentoring skills
  • Sound presentation skills
  • Able to work under external pressures and handle these pressures
  • Understanding of Employment Law
  • Above average administration skills
  • Ability to continuously look for ways to gain employment for jobseekers
  • To think out the box to uncover opportunities.
