NICRO Advocacy Project on Criminal Record Expungement

Categories: HEADLINES, Offenders and Ex-offenders rehabilitation
NICRO is launching an Advocacy Project to relook at the Criminal Record Expungement process. We have encountered too many of our clients who have been struggling with this issue, particularly in securing jobs, stigma etc.

This in turn has had an incredibly negative effect on them supporting their families and themselves and with respect to their effective reintegration back into their communities. We have been hosting provincial workshops throughout the country to consult on the above document we have drafted for consultation. The Western Cape workshop takes place at our NICRO Mitchell’s Plain office in Cape Town tomorrow from 09h30 to 13h00. I hope you have already received an invitation. Please let me know if you haven’t and if you are able to attend. If you aren’t able to attend tomorrow, due to the short notice, please feel free to comment on the document and email it back to me, as part of our stakeholder consultation process.

The South African Law Commission has been tasked with the process of conducting an investigation into the criminal record expungement legislation, but they have been going through some organizational changes, and so there have been delays with them beginning their process. We thought we could do these consultations ahead of time, and feed the information back to them as well. We will also continue with our lobbying process with relevant departments and parliament.

I am sure this particular topic affects many of the people you work with too, and we look forward to your comments. Please can you send me any input you may have by the Thursday, 3rd July 2014.
