On Wednesday, 24 June 2015, NICRO, which lays claim to a long and proud history of fighting crime and building a better tomorrow for all South Africans, will host an exciting new sporting event to coincide with Youth Month celebrations.

Forming part of NICRO’s ‘Adopt a School’ initiative and as a special tribute to the youth of our country, Tafelsig and Beacon Hill Senior Secondary Schools will compete in activites.

A fun-filled day of sporting events and activities from 09h00 to 15h00 will be held at the Swartklip Sports Complex in Swartklip Road, Tafelsig. The leading school achieving the most victories will become the proud owner of the winner’s cup, which will be awarded at a special closing ceremony.

MEC of the Western Cape Department of Social Development, Albert Fritz, will be in attendance and share a special message of hope and encourage for our youth. The event will be opened officially by the two school principals, Ms R O’Shea from Tafelsig Secondary School and Mr G Kannemeyer from Beaconhill Secondary School with the Beacon Hill Drill Team forming part of the opening ceremony.

Tiger Brands, which has officially adopted Tafelsig Secondary High, is sponsoring the event as well as an array of give-aways which will include food hampers and other lucky prizes. All competitors and visitors attending the event will be given a numbered armband carrying the slogan ‘NICRO #CRIME IS NOT COOL’ and be treated to refreshments during the course of the day. Each unique armband number will be entered into the lucky draw with great prizes up for grabs. Competitors and members of the public can also look forward to soccer, rugby and netballs challenges, a table tennis contest sponsored by South African Police Services (SAPS), chess tournaments, obstacle courses designed by coaches from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and a hotdog eating completion, all thanks to Tiger Brands’ generous sponsorship.

NICRO, an organisation specialising in social crime prevention and offender reintegration, has set a longstanding benchmark in its work with young people. The organisation boasts a rich, unparalleled history of success in helping young offenders and youth at risk to get their lives back on track and moulding young talent to become responsible, contributing members of society. Through its ‘Adopt a School’ initiative, NICRO mobilises the corporate sector to adopt a school and support the creation and enhancement of an environment which promotes positive, healthy lifestyles as an alternative to crime and anti-social, risky behaviour.

The exciting ‘Adopt a School’ initiative provides a cost-effective, long-term solution to many of the challenges plaguing schools today including bullying, gangsterism, substance abuse and teenage pregnancies. This NICRO programme provides access to a wide range of therapeutic services and youth development opportunities geared towards regenerating positive value systems and addressing the plight of youth in an appropriate restorative manner. The ‘Adopt a School’ programme encourages corporate concerns to adopt school to bring about lasting positive change and help build a brighter future for our youth. This initiative has been designed specifically to build and enhance relationships between learners, their educators and parents and learners themselves, improve student behaviour, entrench positive discipline, resolve violence and bullying, and create a sense of community within schools.
