(Cape Town, Western Cape) - On October 17, individuals and community groups from South Africa will participate in a global event that is mobilizing people to help stop human trafficking.
The event is The A21 Campaign’s “Walk For Freedom” - aiming to shed light on the 27 million men, women, and children who are still trapped in slavery today.
With over 17 different countries participating in last year’s walk, The A21 Campaign, a global anti-human trafficking organization, aims to raise even more awareness and funds in their 2nd annual Walk For Freedom 2015.
The Walk For Freedom’s aim is to spread awareness about trafficking buy having a morning of every day people gathering together, donning the black T-shirt, taping their mouths and walking with a purpose. As the walk moves throughout each city and walk route, information about human trafficking is distributed to onlookers. However, the true multiplication of this message is seen globally through media coverage and pictures distributed through social media.
The Walk For Freedom in Cape Town will be taking place at Sea Point Promenade. A significant spot we feel, as Sea Point is a beautiful area, but behind the scenes many of those who are exploited are housed. This is such a true indication of human trafficking.
One the surface it appears one way- prostitution, labour, illegal immigrants, drug addicts- but when
you look below the surface you see vulnerable people being exploited and abused.
The start walk is on the grass opposite Sea Point High School and goes for 5km around the
promenade. Registration opens at 7am and the walk will commence shortly after 8am. We will have food stalls, live music and time to picnic on the promenade after the walk. It is a family event, you can never be too young or old to stand up for what you believe in!Modern-day slavery is a global reality that affects every continent and economic structure.
The reality is that there is no action without awareness. Through the Walk For Freedom, A21’s goal is to generate conversations that lead to improvements in global aftercare efforts and the prosecution of traffickers worldwide.
Christine Caine, A21’s Founder, says, “The Walk For Freedom plays an integral role in the fight against human trafficking. It’s not just about taking a walk through a popular city, or simply handing out a pile of flyers; it’s about shining a spotlight on injustice and mobilising people to take action. Together we can rescue, restore, and rebuild the lives of human trafficking victims.”
This year, there are more opportunities than ever before to make every step for freedom
count. From Sydney to Los Angeles, London to Cape Town, participants are able to join a walk, host a walk,or even support a walker. In South Africa alone we have 5 walks happening on the day in Witbank, Pretoria, Randburg, Plett and Cape Town.
