Saldanha Bay IDZ Licensing Company Bill; first step towards 21 000 jobs

Categories: HEADLINES, Employment
Today the Standing Committee on Economic Opportunities, Tourism and Agriculture in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, conducted a public hearing on the Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) Licencing Company Bill in Saldanha Bay. In a presentation by the Saldanha Bay IDZ, the community and stakeholders were informed that 21 000 jobs stand to be created in the region, by 2021.

The IDZ Licensing Company Bill is integral to job creation. It will regulate the operations of the Saldanha Bay IDZ in order to create a world class, and internationally recognised Marine Engineering Centre. The focus will be on servicing the international oil and gas companies that are operating along the coast of Africa. This project receives support from all three spheres of government – Local, Provincial and National, and is an important part of Western Cape’s project Khulisa.

Today’s public hearing in Saldanha Bay was the first of two public hearings, with the second being in the Chamber of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament tomorrow, Wednesday 2 March 2016. The public hearings is an opportunity for stakeholders and the involved communities to make submissions pertaining to the preparation of the Saldanha Bay IDZ Licencing Company Bill. The IDZ is a unique opportunity for the community of Saldanha Bay, and it is forecasted to add R53bn into the Gross Geographical Product of the Western Cape and a further R8.2bn in cumulative taxes back to the State.

This project is an example of how public-private partnerships can benefit the economy. It is also an example of how the DA-led Western Cape intends to enable the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs in the province. The oil and gas sector alone stands to create 100 000 jobs in the long term.
