Categories: ALL THE NEWS , Health, Palliative Care
First of it's kind in WC, the unit will provide care and support for children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses in Cape Town.

The Paedspal Palliative Care out patient unit was officially opened at the Rondebosch Medical Centre last week.

WHO IS PAEDSPAL ?
Paedspal Cape Town is a public-private partnership programme that provides care and support for children living with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses in Cape Town. The name is a play on words with the ‘pal’ being a shortening of the word ‘palliative’ as well as a colloquial word for ‘friend’.

WHAT IS PAEDIATRIC PALLIATIVE CARE?

Paediatric Palliative Care (PPC) is a rapidly developing new approach to care, organised in some places as a speciality, to improve the care of children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. It is the science and art of lessening physical, psychosocial, emotional and existential suffering by multi-disciplinary teams that mobilize existing resources around the patient and family.

WHAT SORTS OF PATIENTS WILL THE CLINIC SEE?

Paedspal will see any child from birth to 18 years with a chronic often incurable life-limiting or life-threatening condition. In addition Paedspal will also see children with chronic pain disorders.

WHAT SERVICES WILL THE CLINIC PROVIDE?

As Paediatric Palliative Care is the active total care of the child’s body, mind and spirit it requires a multi-disciplinary team to ensure that the care provided is as holistic as possible.

For this reason you can expect to find the following professionals as the POPU :

  • Paediatric Palliative Care Doctors (Paediatricians and Medical Officer)
  • Family Counsellor
  • Occupational therapist
  • Aromatherapist
  • Consultants called in on a needs basis : art therapy, psychology/psychiatry, clergy

HOW DO YOU ACCESS THE SERVICES OF THIS SPECIALIST CLINIC?

The Paedspal clinic will see both private and public sector patients. Public sector patients will be seen pro-bono and the medical aids of private patients will be billed.

The clinic operates on an elective referral based appointment system. All patients seen at the POPU need to be referred by a health care professional from either the public or private sector. A POPU referral form needs to be completed by the child’s doctor.

The POPU is not designed to deal with emergencies on a regular basis and all patients should go to their nearest hospital or clinic in the event of an emergency. The POPU is not a children’s hospice and does not provide in-patient care. Patients will be referred to hospitals or other health care facilities for in-patient care.

The Paedspal team also provides in–hospital consultations mostly to Red Cross War Memorial, Groote Schuur and Mowbray Maternity hospitals and other private hospitals on request. Although our capacity to provide home care services is limited we will do home visits on a needs basis.

Appointments in the centre are designed to add extra support to patients and families of children with life-limiting conditions and do not replace regular follow up arrangements with usual /primary care providers. Paedspal will make contact with, and work in partnership with the referring doctor to ensure the best possible quality of life for the child. Once patients have had an initial assessment, follow up arrangements will be made on an individual needs basis.
