The DA in the Western Cape is concerned about continuing reports of unlawful deductions made from social grants accounts belonging to SASSA beneficiaries.

In my capacity as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Community Development in the Western Cape Provincial Legislature, I have called the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to brief the committee on the fraudulent deductions from SASSA beneficiary accounts. In addition, the entity will outline the measures that it has taken to ensure that these unlawful acts are stopped. SASSA will also outline what measures they have in place to assist beneficiaries that have been robbed and to reimburse those who have lost money.

It has come to light that there is a country wide syndicate that has stolen money from unsuspecting SASSA beneficiaries and we welcome the arrests that have been made. We look forward to hearing whether SASSA plans to implement preventative measures to curb this criminality.

We urge affected beneficiaries and interest groups to attend the briefing and learn what steps they can take to ensure that no unlawful deductions are made from their accounts. Furthermore, the committee will allow victims an opportunity to air their grievances on this and other matters in relation to SASSA through written submissions to the committee.

The DA is committed to tackling corruption and to protecting our most vulnerable citizens.

Details of the briefing are as follows:

Date: 31 May 2016
Time: 08h30 – 13h00
Venue: Chamber, 7 Wale Street, Cape Town
