What a Waste

Categories: ALL THE NEWS , Wildlife & Conservation
Without even realizing it we are constantly surrounded by waste - waste that we usually only use once and never again!

The coffee to go in the morning, the takeaway for lunch and the grocery shopping at night. Nowadays it's hard to find anything that isn't made out of plastic (or at least wrapped in it). But do we really need all that packaging? Or has it just become part of today's lifestyle of convenience and, I suppose in some ways, carelessness?

Fact is, 50% of the plastic we use is single-use. We use it for an average of 5 minutes and then toss it away. While some of it may be recycled once or twice, much ends up in landfills, in rivers, and swirling around in The Great Pacific Garbage Patch where it will take over 700 years to decompose. And even when it does break down, the toxic chemicals released from plastic pollution have drastic negative effects on our health, the health of other species, and the health of our planet.

So what can we do? It's actually quite simple. Start by bringing your own bag for groceries or taking a Tupperware with you rather than eating from disposable crockery. Use your own mug for your morning coffee (it can even earn you a discount)! Instead of buying veggies in plastic wrapping, why not grow your own and enjoy having fresh seasonal food! Small changes can go a long way when it comes to plastic pollution. And as Howard Zinn once wisely said: “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.” So let's take action now and trash our wasteful habits!

Find more inspiration below and see how easy and fun it can be to live waste-free! Maybe you will even discover your green thumb?
