National Children’s Day celebrated at the Nappy Run™

On 5 November the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA) hosted their annual fun run/walk event.
The 5km run was held at the Johannesburg Zoo in Parktown, in celebration of National Children’s Day to raise nappies and awareness of rights for children with disabilities. The first runner up of Mr. South Africa 2016, Morné Marais, compered the event, which was attended by over 300 runners/walkers who eagerly took on the challenge to complete the 5km in support of the cause.
Over 10 000 nappies were collected at the event from individuals, corporates and society groups. Vodacom Blue Bulls mascot, Bulletjie, made a special appearance and also joined in on the walk with the participants. The winning runner was awarded a brunch voucher for two by the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. The best-dressed Nappy Run™ participant won a Vodacom Blue Bulls T-shirt signed by the rugby team.
Children with disabilities have a disproportionately high need for nappies due to incontinence associated with various types of disabilities, hence their need for nappies up to an advanced age. The exclusion, marginalization of and accessibility for persons with disabilities are paramount challenges within our society. Basic necessities like nappies are not affordable to the majority of families of children with disabilities and many children have to do without them and are deprived of a most basic need,” said Therina Wentzel, National Director of NCPPDSA, “And through our annual Nappy Run™ campaign, we offer thousands of children comfort, dignity and freedom of movement which are compromised by having to go without nappies.
The event was a highlight of the Nappy Run™ campaign which is set to run throughout November (Disability Rights Awareness Month) and aims to raise 50 000 nappies, which will be distributed to care centres and families of children with disabilities throughout the country. The campaign has been running annually since 2011 and have raised over 500 000 nappies. This year Nappy Run™ was supported by sponsors Marsh and Rebosis Property Fund.
Individuals, corporates and society groups are urged to support the Nappy Run™ campaign and make their physical donations at the national drop-off points, or visit www.nappyrun.org.za to donate their Nappy Rands. All funds raised will go towards the Nappy Run™ campaign.
