Hope House celebrates a milestone

Categories: Health, Social & Community

Hope House Counselling Centre, a nonprofit organisation that provides donation-based individual, child, family and trauma counselling to the community has turned thirteen. Starting in the Lakeside lounge of its founder, Judy Strickland, the organisation now operates out of three fully-fledged centres in Bergvliet, Kuilsriver and Table View.

“Years ago, my husband and I recognised the huge need for affordable counselling services in Cape Town. We set about looking for welcoming houses, situated on public transport routes, from which we could offer counselling to anybody who asked for it,” says Strickland, whose area of expertise is child counselling and play therapy.

According to Strickland, those who cannot afford to pay a therapist, which can cost upwards of R450 per hour, are left without adequate access to mental health services. At Hope House, anybody who feels that they need to talk to someone supportive can make an appointment to see a counsellor in a confidential and respectful environment. What they can afford in donation goes towards the upkeep and running costs of the centres.

“Everybody experiences periods of grief, conflict and extreme stress at some point in their lifetime. We work with families going through divorce, children who have been abused, victims of crime and women with postnatal depression,” says Strickland. It is the sheer demand for these services that has seen the remarkable growth of the organisation from one room to three centres with more than 50 counselling volunteers, spread across the city.

Visit Hope House Bergvliet at 14 Silverhurst Way and book an appointment via info@hopehouse.org.za or call 021 715 0424. In addition to the above counselling services, Hope House also runs substance abuse prevention and intervention programmes in schools across Cape Town and provides training and field work experience for lay counsellors.
