COOL PLAY - 3/2 - DAY AT HAMILTONS 10’S RUGBY TOURNAMENT
On the 3rd of February, a very hot Saturday I was privileged to be invited to be part of the CoolPlay day at Hamilton’s Rugby 7’s Club.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation together with the Zando Cape Town 10s hosted a proactive and inspiring coaching clinic for CoolPlay children at Hamiltons Rugby Club. CoolPlay was establish in early 2000 and uses sport to teach life-skills to school children often lacking in stable and supportive family structures.
Their vision is to ‘create positive and lasting change in the lives of children, their schools and the communities in which they live’ believing that developing a child’s emotional and social competencies will increase the chances of a child’s success in their inter-personal relationships going forward in life.
CoolPlay is an NPO that we have collaborated with in teaching our Model in Social Emotional Learning Skills to the CoolPlay Champions. The champion is skilled in social and emotional learning skills and conduct year round rugby and netball training sessions as many schools around the Western Cape.
There are eight main principles within the CoolPlay training and these tie in with our Model at Foundations for Life Social and Emotional Learning Centre. Their principals include
- Team goals
- Team values
- Identifying Skill and character strengths
- Creating team spirit / cohesion
- Maintaining composure
- Optimistic thinking
- Responsible decision making
This day was made even more memorable for 100 CoolPlay girls and boys as they spent the morning being coached and displaying their rugby and netball prowess together with life skills that they have learnt through the CoolPlay programme, with the Zando Cape Town 10’s legends teams which included the likes of Laureus Ambassadors Jean De Villiers, Corne Kruger, Dan Nicholl and Zanele Mdodana.
The children and coaches of CoolPlay also got the opportunity to demonstrate to the rugby and netball legends some of the activities and life lessons taught through the CoolPlay training sessions.
All the activities were thoroughly enjoyed by all and it gave me a wonderful opportunity to meet most of the champions and be involved in one of their events. We look forward to working with these amazing champions using our Social Emotional Learning Model to enhance the amazing work they already do.
We were also very privileged to witness a special capping ceremony for twelve young boys from the CoolPlay program who have been selected to take part in the Laureus and Hong Kong 7’s exchange. This is being sponsored by Laureus and is such an amazing and exciting opportunity for the boys and the champions.
