Prof Jonathan Jansen visits our campus

Categories: ALL THE NEWS , Education, Social & Community
Just last week we had a special visit from transformational education veteran and Stellenbosch University Professor, Jonathan Jansen.

Jansen came to see first-hand how Christel House magically works towards breaking the cycle of poverty. Jansen was expressly moved by the fact that we admit students from Cape Town’s most impoverished communities and give them a tangible opportunity to rise above their circumstances.

Like our students, Professor Jansen grew up on the Cape Flats and faced similar hardships– and today, is a true embodiment of a success story. As a staunch and out-spoken believer in transformative education, Jansen applauded our education model which picks for poverty over talent.

“Understand Christel House and you have the keys to solving our national school crisis,” Jansen enthusiastically posted on his personal Facebook page after his visit.

Jansen encouraged the students to believe in themselves, to respect who they are and praised our recent, impressive grade 12 academic achievements – including our 100% grade 12 pass rate for the past 10 years

True to his reputation as a man who pays it forward, he offered to return to Christel House to work closely with our Grade 7 girls to develop their journalist talent.

Feed A Future

From the greens of Stellenbosch to the famous Galileo big screen, the Christel House #FeedAFuture campaign has been reaching audiences around the Cape.

Christel House Golf Day

On 1 March, we held our Annual Christel House Charity Golf Day, sponsored by Platform 5,  at the prestigious Stellenbosch Golf Club. Thanks to our partners, supporters and sponsors, the event raised an incredible R144 000 towards our school feeding program.

At a cost of R20 a day to feed one child at Christel House, all funds raised are channelled towards feeding our 750 students, ensuring they are ready to learn every single day.

Galileo Charity Drive

Christel House recently collaborated with The Galileo Open Air Cinema in a 2-week charity drive to collect donations and raise awareness of our 'Feed A Future' campaign. Movie-goers were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to each movie screening at the various Galileo locations in and around Cape Town. Our #FeedAFuture commercial was flighted prior to the screening of each movie.

A big thank you to Team Galileo and to those of you who have made donations at the screenings!
