The Chrysalis Academy has done wonderful work to train 11 Youth Ambassadors from Kwa Zulu Natal. They joined the programme on 7 September 2012 and have not seen their families since then. For 6 weeks, they were provided with the opportunity to be students at the Academy. The provincial government of Kwazulu Natal has now decided to set up its own youth Academy based on the Chrysalis Academy model.
They requested the Chrysalis Academy management to train their first group of Youth Instructors. We look forward to working with the new Youth Academy in the interest of the youth of South Africa. The training of youth Instructors is certainly a contribution that the Chrysalis Academy can make to youth development in the country as a whole.
This course saw the highest post graduate placements with the assistance of the Department of Community Safety and Social development in the province. Number of students graduating: 166 plus 11 from KZN (177).

Skills Phase training
The skills phase training was very successful and the following courses were offered during the 12 BRAVO course – welding, electrical circuitry, security training, sports coaching, Basic cookery, Office Administration and Fire fighting.
A successful community phase saw many of the students doing lots of meaningful work around the Chrysalis ACADEMY – gardening, cleaning, painting. A team also volunteered at SANPARKs clearing alien vegetation and at the Retreat Day Hospital doing various cleaning chores there. We firmly believe that these are the kinds of activities that Chrysalis Academy men and women should continue to be involved in as active citizens working for change.
A very successful two day career exhibition was held involving various law enforcement agencies from the City, SEDA (Small business development agency) and many of the FET colleges. In fact, over 80 students initially applied for the Safety in Society programme.
Finally after two phases of screening and students weighing up various other work related offers, 54 will now enter the Safety Society programme starting in January 2013.
The following other concrete initiatives are now being implemented.
Department of Community Safety’s internship made possible through the Extended Public Works programme.
Students selected will work on various beaches and at various CIDS over the festive period for a period of three months.
83 have been appointed. They will start working on 10 December 2012. From the 83, 12 will be placed at the Chrysalis Academy for a period of 3 months to gain practical work experience.

Social Development Internship programme
9 students have been succesful in their application for internships at some of the Places of Safety around the province. However, following some of the successful applicants receiving also other good offers, 5 have now accepted this internship and will be starting within the next week or so at either Lindelani or Bonnytown.
8 of the women graduates who completed their course in July 2012 will be placed at the Vredelus Girls place of safety in Elsie River.These appointments are largely due to the fact that some of the Chrysalis Academy graduates who graduated in March 2012 have been working at some of these places of Safety since May 2012 and doing a fantastic job there. Some of those who are doing really well may even have the opportunity to apply for full-time jobs in government.

Mario Dean Hendricks
The Gulf recruitment agency did interviews for various warehouses of Woolworths. They are processing the applications of 85 students.
This is a consultancy doing training and development work and recruitment for SANPARKS. 32 students will be interviewed here at the Chrysalis Academy on Monday and Tuesday 3-4 December 2012.
Junior Instructors in Training
With the assistance of the Department of Community Safety, the Chrysalis Academy will be appointing a number of graduates as junior instructors in training so that we can fastrack the building up of a pool of instructors who can be called upon to assist throughout the province in various projects. Already we have had a request from the Eden District Municipality to set up an Academy there and the CEO and I will be visiting them next week.
