Image: Qhubeka distributes 175 Bicycles to Paarl East Community, funded by Team Dimension Data and partners Qhubeka, a charity that moves people forward with bicycles is distributing 175 bicycles to schoolchildren and Neighbourhood Watch volunteers.

Qhubeka, a charity that moves people forward with bicycles is distributing 175 bicycles to schoolchildren and Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) volunteers in the Paarl East community (150 bicycles for learners and 25 for NHW members). The learners’ bicycles have been funded by Team Dimension Data, Africa’s first World Tour cycling team, and will help schoolchildren to travel to and from school more easily. The NHW bicycles, funded by Nederburg (one of the team’s sponsors), will boost safety in the community by improving NHW members’ ability to do security patrols and turning chaperoned school walking “buses” into school cycling “buses”.   Read More...

The centre assists 80-100 children from the community. These include orphaned and vulnerable children from the community as well children with mental disabilities from the nearby Motshepuwa Public School. The following services are provided to the children: provision of home cooked meals, after school activities including homework and sports activities. Image: 15 new road bicycles for Masiphumelele youngsters Fifteen avid cyclists from Songezo Jim’s Cycling Academy are excited about trying out the brand new bicycles sponsored by the Rotary Club of Claremont

Helmets and kit were sponsored by the Pedal Power Association (PPA).

The Academy is run by South Africa’s most famous black cyclist, who hails from Masiphumelele. The new bikes (pictured above) effectively double Songezo Jim’s stock of bicycles which are ridden under his watchful eye by eager young girls and boys who aspire to be like him one day.   Read More...
