Social development objectives
The Friends of Valkenberg Trust collaborates with staff at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital to promote the recovery of people with serious mental illnesses.
This vital work means people can get back to their lives - their families, their jobs and their communities - better equipped to continue their recovery journey.
Company descriptor about social initiatives/drivers
In South Africa, mental illness affects a large percentage of the population - nearly 1 in 3 adults in the Western Cape are expected to develop a mental disorder at some point.
Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital serves adults from a diverse area of more than a million people in the Western Cape.
Most come from disadvantaged communities. Many have little family or community support and will be in hospital for many weeks. Many are marginalized and struggle to access community resources due to their disability.
The Friends has one goal in mind – recovery. Recovery is a process, often a long, difficult one. But progress is attainable with the right support.
Vision/Steps for achieving targets within the company
Friends gets people back on their feet by partnering with the Hospital to offer complementary services and activities which target each aspect of the recovery process, whether it be enhancing independent living skills, building vital self-esteem, improving physical activity, offering work skills or providing the practical support to make this all possible.
Friends rely on the support of community partners who work with us to make recovery possible.
