Love in the time of Corona…

A response from the Pietermaritzburg & District Community Chest to President Ramaphosa’s declaration of a national disaster due to Covid-19.

In light of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of a pandemic and President Ramaphosa’s declaration of a national disaster, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Community Chest would like to inform our donor and beneficiary communities that we heed the President’s call.

The measures announced by our President to contain the spread of and fight against COVID-19 will negatively affect the operations of the Community Chest. However, we remain committed to doing our best under the circumstances to continue with our mission of mobilising resources in support of our community impact partners. April marks the start of our 2020/21 financial year and new pledges of support to our partners. We will still make such pledges, in good faith, and we will continue to engage with our donor community, to share in this faith.

Life and the community challenges we faced before COVID-19 will still confront us after we have won the fight against the virus. Post COVID-19, the task of enhancing our communities and restoring hope will become even more critical, if we as a nation are to ensure that we are even better prepared to fight another pandemic like COVID-19, or worse. We therefore appeal to all our benefactors and beneficiaries - continue to work with us as we remain focused on our realising our vision of a better, healthier and safer community, for us all.

Biomedical researcher and author Mala Naidoo has this to say, “The time for emotional stability, love, support and understanding has arrived! As an optimist, my first response was to roll up my sleeves and forge ahead, but this is actually not a time for bravado, so I am putting down my sword and staying put at home. The best gift we can give our country now is to take the necessary precautions and to be aware of our thoughts, feelings and attitudes - focusing more on meditation, breathing exercises and positive encouragement.  It is time for us to act responsibly in spreading our love instead of fear. Love builds the immune system, fear breaks down the body.  The choice is ours.”
