8 TONS OF RICE, WITH LOVE FROM TAAIWAN
Author: SA Red Cross Society
On the 19nth August the Taiwanese Liaison Office, headed by Director Lily-Chen officially handed over 8 tons of rice – enough to feed 10 000 people!
With various Ministers and officials there such as Dr Ivan Meyer and Advocate Felicity Purchase in attendance, Fernel Campher (SARCS’ Provincial Manager for the Western Cape) showed his delight with broad smiles throughout the handover. As Dr Meyer stated that now with the Ramaphosa has embraced diversity, especially in the realm of Inclusive Economic Growth – Taiwan as a nation displays this in a unique and generous way.
Dr Meyer went on to further state that this rice will effectively alleviate hunger and poverty and ultimately build a functional state. It has to start somewhere and 8 tons of rice, with love from Taiwan, goes a long way to establish a sense of relief and equality. It was remarked by all as to what a special event this was as more than 24% live below the poverty line and much is to be done.
No words can truly express the humble thanks from the SA Red Cross WC – sometimes, thank you is quite simply not a big enough word.
Our communal celebration of this event was celebrated with delicious Taiwanese cuisine and with some of the beneficiaries there – the gratitude felt tangible.
The SA Red Cross Western Cape would like to officially thanks the Taiwanese Liaison office for equipping us with power to alleviate the hunger that is the order of the day with many South Africans and accentuated in the flooding that we have recently experienced. As the Taiwanese know “ In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” and we, at the SA Red Cross Society who face much in the way of hardship celebrate Taiwan’s brave example and look forward to the many opportunities that lie ahead
