Forging Career Pathways at Silikamva High
Author: Common Good
This month, we asked for volunteers to help 21 matriculants with online tertiary applications. We are thrilled to report that 2 got into further studies, and 5 alumni from 2022 were accepted into various institutions.
We also hosted a 2-day Job Readiness session which covered how to write a cover letter, create a CV, and strategically search and apply for work. The session was attended by 9 matriculants. One of the attendees, Liyema Tukuza, was accepted at the University of Fort Hare to study Bachelor of Commerce. We wish her the best on this very exciting journey.

February is a time when thousands of students embark on their tertiary education journey but for many, pursuing post-secondary education remains beyond their reach.
There is substantial evidence indicating that many young individuals in South Africa are exiting the education system without attaining their matric or other post-secondary education, severely limiting their prospects for ongoing learning, earning, and various other opportunities.

At Common Good, we have a relentless determination to see individuals live full and flourishing lives and reach their full God-given potential. We know firsthand that many factors contribute to learners not studying further or finding employment post-matric. That’s why we offer our holistic support programme aptly called, Career Readiness to the Grade 8-12 learners at our partner school, Silikamva High in Imizamo Yethu.
We piloted this programme in 2023 with the Gr 9-12 learners and facilitated 20 sessions that were attended by 471 learners and assisted 67 matriculants with applications to further studies. We connected 27 learners to meaningful opportunities post-matric.
This year we will extend our reach by including Gr 8 learners and will start the process of replicating Career Readiness in other high schools.
