Word from our
leadership team

Welcome August and welcome Women’s Month! I want to start with a quote by Audrey Hepburn; ‘as you grow older, you will realise you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.’ As we reflect on inspirational women and humanitarians for World Humanitarian Day, we envisage our foundress Victoire Larmenier. She undoubtedly embodied both these traits and lived them admirably. ‘The heart of her (Victoire’s) legacy was her deep love of God and her desire to serve the poor, and it was out of this faith and sense of mission that the Congregation of the Sisters of Nazareth was eventually born.’ - Victoire’s biography, ‘Spirit and Vision’ by Peter Hughes and Eileen Pickard. Victoire Larmenier has inspired many to follow her Vision, and we, as The Sisters of Nazareth, are honoured to continue her Mission.

This past month we raised awareness for Mental Health Week. Whilst mental health affects all ages, the number of seniors with mental disorders is expected to double by 2030. During the Covid-19 pandemic, this has become true for many elderly people. Forced social distancing has cut many seniors off from the world. The conversation at the grocery store, chatting to the staff at the coffee shop, or waiting for a visit from their daughter was their way of socialising. In our Houses, we’ve made every effort to sustain social interaction in a Covid friendly way. We ask that you pay careful attention to your ageing loved ones, as well as those in your community. Stop and say hi and ask how they are doing. We are all going to grow old one day, and we are all in this together!

We want to say a Big Thank You to all those who supported our Nelson Mandela campaign! Due to the safeguarding of our residents, we could not invite volunteers to our House as we normally do and therefore had to think out of the box. Between our 7 Nazareth Houses in South Africa we identified 36 projects consisting of a mix of items such as food vouchers, a sensory garden in Cape Town, new toilets in Johannesburg, and pest control in Durban! 25 of these were successfully pledged, totalling a financial value of R218 370, massive relief for the organisation in these difficult times. If you would like to get involved, we are still eagerly busy with our reading room for the children at the Child and Youth Care Centre in Cape Town.

In closing, we’d like to share a warm welcome to all our new residents, families and friends that are joining our Nazareth Care family this month. Even when times are tough, we have so much to be thankful for.

Fancy Retiring In South Africa’s ‘Warmest Place To Be’?

Durban’s relaxed lifestyle, friendly population and warm climate makes it a great place to slow down, put your feet up, and call home. Known for its exquisite beaches, seafront promenade, and aromatic spices, this coastal city also has a bustling retirement community.

Nazareth House Durban is nestled in the exclusive residential suburb, Berea, amongst the eclectic mix of architectural styles that include large Victorian, Edwardian, art deco and modern homes. The large property is a tropical oasis with palm trees and rolling green lawns. Situated high on the ridge, one can see views of the harbour and city below. (Read More)

My Vocational Journey:
Sister Mirriam Wangúi Nduta

The earliest time I remember actively engaging in thoughts of being a Sister was when I was in my third year of high school. Back in the day, we had this trend where we wrote journals about our future aspirations, desires, and the likes. For fun, we had our friends write what their predictions about our future would be and vice-versa. When I circulated my book, it came back with “Sister” on the career prediction slot. My friends and I had a good laugh at this and eventually, I got them to cancel out Sister and replace it with something else.  (Read More)

Celebrating Our Core Values:
Justice

Victoire Larmenier was fair and impartial with everyone, even when people or issues were difficult or challenging. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice for they shall be satisfied.” – Matt 5:6 We uphold what is fair, decent, respecting his/her rights in a balanced and fair manner. The core value of justice requires us to give respect to one another. We all should gain self-knowledge and to do that we need to look in the mirror and judge ourselves so that we know ourselves. Justice does not only require that we judge others fairly, but also that we judge ourselves fairly. FIND OUT MORE

Support Our
20K Campaign

Nazareth Care is reliant on donations to ensure the sustainability and longevity of the organisation. Continuing the legacy of the Sisters of Nazareth and the care Nazareth House offers to the most vulnerable, it is essential to educate a broader audience of our Mission and seek further funding in addition to our other income streams. The 20K Campaign will aid in reducing the monthly shortfall. These funds will be used across our organisation, Nazareth Care Africa, enabling the organisation to continue its’ efforts in all areas.
