The South African Red Cross Society’s mission is to render services to prevent and alleviate human suffering and to foster human dignity by addressing the basic needs of the people. Tracey Botha, Fundraising and PR Manager of the Red Cross says, “Our vision is to provide a humanitarian service that is effective, high profile and dynamic. As an organisation that effectively embraces the multi-faceted needs of the community, the Red Cross is always available no matter what. That is why we can confidently say: ‘always needed and always there!’” she says. The Red Cross is partnering on various community-based projects to educate and prevent issues like drug abuse, HIV/Aids and STI’s in young people, and help vulnerable youth in poor and underprivileged communities.

Some of the community projects the Red Cross is currently partnering in:

1.    HIV/AIDS, STI’s and TB education and prevention programmes aimed at adolescents. New infections among youth and young adolescents is the primary health concern for young people, surpassing even adolescent fertility. Studies indicate that although young people are aware of the epidemic, many at-risk populations are unaware of how to protect themselves, particularly against the misconceptions about HIV/AIDS, like having sex with a virgin can cure the disease. These dangerous perceptions and risky behaviours suggest lack of access to education, economic opportunities and health promotion services, which the programme aims to address.

2.    Upskilling children in First Aid training. First Aid training has always been focused on adults, but children are often first responders in emergency situations, especially in communities where younger children are vulnerable, without sufficient adult supervision. Elastoplast has teamed up with the SA Red Cross Red Cross to teach children aged 10 to 13 years in solid first aid training. A programme that has the potential to save many lives.

3.    Reducing the likelihood of offenders, reoffending through education, support and prevention programmes to vulnerable youth with #OperationHope Alliance. A recent study showed that about 9 out of 10 ex-offenders reoffend in South Africa, that’s 90% of the prison population of roughly 260,000, one of the highest and most unsustainable in the world. The Red Cross and partners will work with vulnerable youth to reduce the lure of gangsterism and drugs which lands them in jail in the first place, often for petty crimes. This time in jail often turns these young boys into hardened criminals.
