Share The Love With 2-for-1 Penguin Adoptions This Valentines Month
Author: SANCCOB
Have you adopted your penguin yet? There is still time to get your 2-for-1 Valentine's penguin adoptions, offered until 28 February because we are doubling the penguin love for the entire month.
Adopt and name an African penguin undergoing rehabilitation at R600 and you'll get to choose a second penguin to name at no extra cost. Donations received from penguin adoptions helps us with purchasing fish, covering medication costs and contributes to the overall rehabilitation to get the birds ready for release back to the wild where they belong. Adopt here now and email your second penguin choice with naming details to Megan@sanccob.co.za for your extra certificate. Give a meaningful gift to your special Valentine.
Cape gannet chick rescue
At SANCCOB Cape Town, we are hand-rearing 80 Cape gannet chicks. In January, gannet nests at Bird Island on the West Coast were flooded due to severe swells combined with spring tide. More than 100 gannet chicks were reported to have drowned and CapeNature made the decision to rescue the remaining chicks at risk of the same fate. The chicks were brought to SANCCOB in three batches on the 20th, 21st and 24th of January, and substantially younger than the gannet fledglings SANCCOB usually admits annually in May and June. Of course, the younger the chicks, the longer they have to stay in our care to reach fledging age and weight. Their feeding is taking its toll on resources and we need to purchase an estimated four tons of sardines for the gannets until they reach release-readiness. The chicks are currently consuming one ton of sardines every two weeks.

Donate-A-Brick
We are raising funds to build a Visitor Centre at SANCCOB Cape Town. For a donation of R200 you can Donate-A-Brick here (remember to select Donate-A-Brick from the list) and contribute towards the building blocks that will become a venue for hosting learners participating in SANCCOB's education programmes, as well as a skills development hub for veterinary and seabird rehabilitation professionals. Read more about this project here.
If you are affiliated with a company that may be interested to support this building project, then please contact Tonia via email at Tonia@sanccob.co.za.
African penguin chicks and eggs
At the same time as the gannet rescue operation, SANCCOB was called upon to take in close to 200 African penguin eggs and 22 African penguin chicks from Simon's Town and Stony Point. Cape Town experienced extreme heat conditions mid-January and conservation authorities initiated a colony sweep to collect abandoned eggs and chicks that would not have survived without intervention. Eggs are hatching almost daily now, and our egg incubators are at full capacity with more than 120 eggs in the Chick Rearing Unit. We're going to need a lot more hands on deck! Volunteer and intern support on-site has been a lifesaver and we welcome volunteer applications. Contact Brittany at volunteers@sanccob.co.za to volunteer or sign up for our internship programmes.
