Author: Clowns Without Borders SA (CWBSA)
Clowns Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA), the Universities of Cape Town and Oxford, Parenting for Lifelong Health (PLH) as well as communications agency, Bloom and Stone launch 1st adaptation of the Parenting for Lifelong Health programmes.
These programmes will be presented as a 12-episode dynamic radio show, ‘Sinovuyo’s Story.’
This will be the first time that the evidence-informed programmes, PLH will be aired as a radio series. Usually, the intervention involves weekly face-to-face group meetings of parents, caregivers and adolescents, however, to reach wider audiences, key messages have been produced into ‘Sinovuyo’s Story. This is an exciting, fast-moving story about 4 friends, navigating modern life and relationships with their peers and families. The radio series will be launched on the 25th of May 2022 for 12 weeks, the show will be aired on Wednesdays at 11.10 with Mahikeng FM on FM 96.7.
CWBSA’s overall goal is development and delivery of creative and facilitation interventions in South Africa and the continent. The organisation has reached over 500 000 children and caregivers since 2007, providing psychosocial support and violence prevention tools through theatre, play, capacity building and laughter.
CWBSA is an implementor of the PLH family strengthening programmes that contribute to the reduction of child maltreatment and improving relationships between parents, caregivers, children, and youth through social learning and positive parenting techniques. PLH has been implemented all over South Africa with the Department of Social Development, UNICEF South Africa, and non-profit organisations, as well as over 20 countries worldwide. It is part of the Global Parenting Initiative, a network of academics, international agencies and non-governmental organisations providing and scaling up free, accessible, evidence-based, parenting support.
“This will be the first time we translate the PLH programmes to radio, it has been an exhilarating journey with Bloom and Stone creating the stories of the girls and families as well as capturing their experiences in Setswana. Real life stories have been heard as well with the help of Department of Social Development (DSD) social workers in the Northwest province,” mentions Co-Director, Suzan Eriksson, Co- Director. “We are excited to find out how families will react to the story and if they find the issues raised will relate to their own lives and encourage them to speak to other parents/caregivers in their communities for support.”
