The outcome today is historic, not just because it sets a legally binding mandate or because it acknowledges that the entire lifecycle of plastic, from fossil fuel extraction to disposal, creates pollution that is harmful to people and the planet, but because it does all of the above!

 

That’s right. For the first time EVER, we have the mandate to start negotiating a legally binding global plastics treaty that incorporates ALL STAGES of the lifecycle of plastic pollution in the environment. This is critical, and it is what you and millions of others have been demanding.

BUT this is FAR from over. Countries will start to negotiate the terms of the treaty later this year, and we must continue to defend its potential. We will push for strong binding commitments, reuse over false solutions and center justice for frontline communities and workers.

 

We must ensure governments across the world continue to feel the pressure to negotiate for a strong plastics treaty.
