Why do we wear green ribbons for child protection week?

Author: riaan@wecanchange.co.za

Child Protection Week is taking place from 30 May - 6 June. Many children get taken advantage of by the people who are supposed to be protecting them and there is an urgent need to raise this issue.

Child Protection Week aims to mobilise society to act on the issues that children face daily, and to ensure that all children are taken care of and protected. Child protection is a huge issue across the globe, but in countries like South Africa where poverty looms so large it is very easy for our youth to slip through the cracks and be overlooked.

This Child Protection week we urge everyone to wear the Green Ribbon in solidarity of child protection.

The reason we wear the green ribbon is because:

  1. Green symbolizes growth and life and that is what the children of the nation are.
  2. Wearing the ribbon shows that you care about the issue of child protection.
  3. Wearing the ribbon shows your standing in solidarity with the victims of child abuse.
  4. Wearing the ribbon emphasizes the importance of partnership in tackling the issues of child abuse.

We urge everyone to proudly wear their green ribbon this child protection week as a means of standing in solidarity with the worlds children. It is very important for us to take care of our children as they are the future of our world.

This month we have been hard at work, focused and committed to ensuring that we are teaching our Club Members and facilitators about the signs of child abuse, what to do in a situation where you suspect a child is being abused and how to provide the necessary intervention if the situation needs it. We partnered with WMACA for a week long training program across all seven of our clubs, educating our facilitators on handling child abuse disclosures. We are always looking for ways to make sure that we are upskilling our staff with the right right kind of expertise and if you would like to assist us with this please contact us on info@bgcsa.org. As always we need donations to do our work so please make a donation here if you are able.

I would like to end this newsletter with a few pictures from our Africa Day celebrations that took place on the 25 May 2021. If you would like to see more of these amazing moments, you can keep up to date on all out social media platforms. We look forward to engaging with you there!
